Anthony and Cluck start with the premise that, even with comfortable salaries and good jobs, young people today enter adulthood already in debt. There are student loans, post-graduation moving expenses, car costs, security deposits, credit card-financed household furnishings, etc. They also complain that none of the personal money management books currently available address this problem. Anthony is a freelance personal finance Web consultant, and Cluck is an associate creative director at an entertainment brand agency. Together they have already eliminated $27,000 in debt of their own and now they want to show others how to do the same. Anthony and Cluck’s tips are, in fact, your father’s and mother’s standard financial advice disguised by the duo’s hip delivery. It will catch off guard those who may be resistant to earnest sermons about budgeting and financial planning. There is even a chapter hinting that it is cool to be frugal, with suggestions for “cheap dates,” recipes for eat-in meals that replace restaurant fare, and a listing of Web sites where one can avoid paying retail.

Most people carry debt for most of their adult lives. Yet, most books on debt focus mainly on how to pay it all off, and live forever without it. Too often, following that advice leads only to failure. People either give up, or pay off the wrong kinds of debt. They strand themselves with too little flexibility to survive a financial crisis — and land in bankruptcy court. They neglect saving for retirement, homes, or college, and end up poorer than they might have been. For most people, it’s more realistic — and smarter — to control and manage debt effectively, rather than eliminating it completely. Debt Smart shows how. Award-winning personal finance columnist Liz Weston explains the rules and explodes the myths surrounding debt. Discover the crucial role debt can play in a portfolio, identifying debts that actually contribute to  wealth and flexibility, while avoiding or eliminating “toxic” debts. Weston presents effective strategies for evaluating, monitoring, and paying every form of debt, from credit cards and mortgages to student and auto loans. She offers practical guidelines for how much debt one should take on.  Find realistic (and often surprising) guidance on everything from home equity loans and 401K borrowing to small business loans.

It is five days since Marnie?s father disappeared. This is worrying, but not unlikely. A famous writer, he is also schizophrenic. Marnie remembers his mania, his affection; and how quickly it could turn to anger. She can?t sleep, and has taken time off work, ostensibly to search for him. But she is struggling. Marnie?s best friend Shiulie tries to cheer her up, but she has her own problems. Her younger sister Jess moves in, but sits on the sofa lost in the TV. This is also worrying, but Marnie will do her best. What she needs most is some good advice; someone to listen, to understand, to scare away the demons. In the streets of the town, missing posters bloom on the lamp posts. The neighbourhood cats have disappeared; Mr Knuckles, the stray she has adopted, vanished with them. Have they been kidnapped? Or has something scared them away? What is most worrying is the sudden presence Marnie senses behind her, at her side, in the corner of her sight; a hot breath on her cheek, a wisp of mane. It is getting more noticeable daily, both reassuring and terrifying. Is she imagining things, or could it be something else – someone to help? An utterly original and hugely imaginative debut, Advice for Strays is a novel about love, loss, family and a very unusual friendship. It marks the arrival of a stunning new voice in contemporary fiction.

This book can save you over $100,000 These days, most people assume you need to pay a boatload of money for a quality college education. As a result, students and their parents are willing to go into years of debt and potentially sabotage their entire financial futures just to get a fancy name on their diploma. But Zac Bissonnette is walking proof that this assumption is not only false, but dangerous-a class con game designed to rip you off and doom your student to a post-graduation life of near poverty . From his unique double perspective-he’s a personal finance expert (at Daily Finance) AND a current senior at the University of Massachusetts-Zac figured out how to get an outstanding education at a public college, without bankrupting his parents or taking on massive loans. Armed with his personal knowledge, the latest data, and smart analysis, Zac takes on the sacred cows of the higher education establishment. He reveals why a lot of the conventional wisdom about choosing and financing college is not only wrong but hazardous to you and your child’s financial future. You’ll discover, for instance, that: * Student loans are NOT a necessary evil. Ordinary middle class families can- and must -find ways to avoid them, even without scholarships. * College “rankings” are useless-designed to sell magazines and generate hype. If you trust one of the major guides when picking a college, you face a potential financial disaster. * The elite graduate programs accept lots of people with non-elite bachelors degrees. So do America’s most selective employers. The name on a diploma ultimately won’t help your child have a more successful career or earn more money. Zac can prove every one of those bold assertions – and more. No matter what your current financial situation, he has a simple message for parents: “RELAX! Your kid will be able to get a champagne education on a beer budget!”
